Stay Hungry Stay Foolish!!

A poignant quote from Jobs’ 2005 commencement speech at Stanford University (via the New York Observer):

No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because death is very likely the single best invention of life. It is life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.

In the late 1970s, Jobs—along with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Mike Markkula and others—designed, developed, and marketed one of the first commercially successful lines of personal computers, the Apple II series. In the early 1980s, Jobs was among the first to see the commercial potential of Xerox PARC’s mouse-driven graphical user interface, which led to the creation of the Macintosh. After losing a power struggle with the board of directors in 1985, Jobs resigned from Apple and founded NeXT, a computer platform development company specializing in the higher-education and business markets. Apple’s subsequent 1996 buyout of NeXT brought Jobs back to the company he co-founded, and he served as its interim CEO from 1997, then becoming permanent CEO from 2000 onwards. After resigning as CEO in August 2011, Jobs was elected chairman of Apple’s board of directors and held that title his death.

In 1986, he acquired the computer graphics division of Lucasfilm Ltd, which was spun off as Pixar Animation Studios. He was credited in Toy Story(1995) as an executive producer. He remained CEO and majority shareholder at 50.1 percent until its acquisition by The Walt Disney Company in 2006. Consequently Jobs became Disney’s largest individual shareholder at 7 percent and a member of Disney’s Board of Directors.

At the time of his resignation, and again after his death, he was widely described as a visionary, pioneer and genius—perhaps one of the foremost—in the field of business, innovation, and product design, and a man who had “profoundly” changed the face of the modern world, revolutionized at least six different industries, and an “exemplar for all chief executives”. His death was widely mourned and considered a loss to the world by commentators across the globe.

Steve leaves behind a company only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.

Barrack Obama:

Steve was among the greatest American innovators – brave enough to think differently, bold enough to beleieve he could change the world, and talented enough to do it.

Mark Zukerberg, Facebook founder:

Steve, thank you for being a mentor and a friend. Thanks for showing that what you build can change the world. I will miss you.

Twitter CEO Dick Costolo:

Once in a rare while, somebody comes along who doesnt just raise the bar, they create an entirely new standard of measurement.

Jerry Yang, Yahoo! co-founder:

He not only gave me a lot of personal advice and encouragement, he showed all of us how innovation can change lives.

Bill Gates, Microsoft co-founder:

For those of us lucky enough to get to work with him, it’s been an insanely great honor.

Larry Page, Google’s co-founder and CEO:

I am very, very sad to hear the news about Steve. He was a great man with incredible achievements and amazing brilliance. He always seemed to be able to say in very few words what you actually should have been thinking before you thought it. His focus on the user experience above all else has always been an inspiration to me. He was very kind to reach out to me as I became CEO of Google and spend time offering his advice and knowledge even though he was not at all well. My thoughts and Google’s are with his family and the whole Apple family.
