2014 FIFA World Cup — Most Memorable Moments
Funjabi Munda collects few of the most memorable moments from this year’s biggest sporting carnival — The 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil.
The Football fans were quick to dive in after Netherland’s stunning demolition of world champions Spain with brilliant pictures, vines and memes. The Dutch captain Robin van Persie’s astonishing diving header against Spain inspired images of the Dutch striker as Superman, Batman and Peter Pan.
Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa sensationally kept Brazil at bay to earn Mexico a 0-0 draw in World Cup Group A in Fortaleza. Brazil and Barcelona star Neymar twice came closest to breaking the deadlock in each half but both times was thwarted by point blank saves by man-of-the-match Ochoa.
Uruguay striker Luis Suarez appeared to bite the Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini in his country’s final group game at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The well known Liverpool frontman had previously bitten Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic on the arm in a Premier League match at Anfield in April 2013, in another incident not seen by the referee. Suarez later issued an apology. He was fined by the club, donating the money to the Hillsborough Family Support Group.
Portugal defender Pepe’s arm caught Germany’s Thomas Mueller during a Group H match and the German fell to the ground grimacing. Pepe infuriated at what he considered Mueller’s playacting then pushed his head onto the German’s forehead and got an immediate red card which resulted him in a ban for one match. FIFA also fined him for this headbutt incident. Previously, a similar incident happened when France’s Zinedine Zidane head butted Italy’s Marco Materazzi in a match in 2006 FIFA World Cup
Colombia’s 2-1 defeat against Brazil in the quarter-finals was all too much for James Rodriguez to bear. The Golden Boot winner Colombian star, broke into tears as his side were eliminated. David Luiz, who scored the winning goal from a free kick, was on hand to console him.
Brazil talisman Neymar was ruled out of the World Cup after Brazil’s team doctor confirmed he suffered a broken vertebra in Friday’s quarter-final victory against Colombia. The brazilian forward was involved in a late collision with Colombia’s Juan Camilo Zuniga in the 88th minute during the quater finals
The shocking 7-1 defeat of the host nation was the worst nightmare any of the brazilian supporters could have ever dreamt of in their life, when the mighty germans netted 7 straight goals in the semi finals thrashing the brazil’s world cup dream. The hosts started relatively brightly, but found themselves behind after just 11 minutes when Toni Kroos’ corner picked out Thomas Muller unmarked inside the area and the Bayern Munich man side-footed beyond Julio Cesar. What followed next was a massacre reducing Brazilian pride to ashes. The match finally ended 7-1, marking it Brazil’s most humiliating defeat in their own country.
The 36 year old German striker broke the most prestigious record of the Brazilian striker Ronaldo, by hitting his 16th World Cup goal in the semi-final match against Brazil. Klose, who scored his first World Cup goals against Saudi Arabia in 2002, overtakes Ronaldo as the tournament’s all-time top scorer. We probably say good bye to one of the greatest international careers, Thank You Miroslav Klose, going out a King.
“Gaúcho da Copa” as he calls himself been dubbed “the saddest man in Brazil,” after cameras caught him hugging his replica World Cup trophy during Brazil’s blowout loss, his face twisted by emotion. At the end of Brazil’s dramatic exit, he handed over his replica trophy to a German fan, reportedly being quoted as saying: “Take it to the finals! As you can see, it is not easy, but you deserve it, congratulations!”
Gotze’s name had always featured in the list of top betrayals in german football history. He was always in the eye’s of his critics and was being hated by many people for being a part of Bayern Munich. All that became history when he emerged as a national hero for germany in the 113th minute of the world cup finals by scoring a goal against Argentina. Gotze’s splendid goal finish, made germany the world cup champions for the 4th time.
